Military service: In 1956, he joined the U. S. Army, serving 3 years; his tour included 15 months in the DMZ of Korea
Marriage: Sandra Soper; Dec. 7, 1960; Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, IA
Employment: After leaving school, John worked for neighboring farmers as a teenager, fixing fences, chopping wood, and hauling hay bales after his military service, he returned to Iowa and was employed in the Dunlap and Dow City areas before moving to Omaha, NE. where he worked for Pepsi Cola, Omaha Grain Exchange, and United Airlines. After his marriage, he worked at IBP, Inc., a meat wholesaler in Denison, IA for 25 years, then Boyer Valley Rendering, and finally for the State of Iowa on road maintenance.
Hobbies/Interests: Loved to go fishing and hunting with his kids; played guitar and sang together as a family; after he retired, he enjoyed playing the banjo and guitar, playing golf, and working in his yard.
