Alma L. Christensen - Age 97

Alma Lucille Christensen, daughter of Chris and Florence (Maxwell) Larson, was born on October 16, 1914 in Center Township near Harlan in Shelby County, Iowa.

She attended country school at Rabbit Hollow and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1931. After graduation she became a school teacher in the rural schools.

As a small child, she attended church at Bowman’s Grove and was later baptized at the Methodist Church in Harlan when she became a member there. She was active in Epworth League and sang in the church choir in her youth.

Alma was united in marriage to Dale Christensen at the Methodist parsonage in Harlan on October 16, 1935. Two children were born to this union: Duane and Grant.

Dale and Alma farmed for fifty-two years in Clay, Polk, and Center Townships. They retired and moved to Harlan in 1987. Dale died a year later in October of 1988.

Alma was a member of the Shelby County Saddle Club, Rebecca Lodge, United Methodist Women, Shelby County Garden Club, and a sixty-five year member of the "Builders" Sunday School Class.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Alma was the last remaining survivor of the graduating Class of 1931.

She is survived by her sons Duane Christensen and his wife Marlene of Harlan, Iowa and Grant Christensen and his wife Mary Jo of Harlan; three grandchildren: Craig Christensen and his wife Holly of Harlan, Michelle Selken of Conrad, Iowa, and Kerry and her husband Michael Jonas of Omaha, Nebraska; five great-grandchildren: Seth and Melanie Selken, Ashley and Marissa Jonas, and Carly Christensen; other family members and friends.

Rev. Darwin Moore officiated the 10:00 AM funeral service on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Greg Madsen, Brent Madsen, Kirk Jacobsen, Mel Huber, Denny Heflin, and Karl Hanson. Interment was held at Bowman’s Grove Cemetery in rural Harlan.
