Ina E. Carroll - Age 93

Ina Evelyn Carroll was born on June 29, 1918 to Christian and Johanna (Jensen) Swensen in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan when she was ten years old. She sang in the church choir as a teenager. Ina attended country school in rural Harlan and after a few years she went to night school to get her G. E. D.

She went to work at Pexton Drug Store and at the nursing home in Harlan. She also owned her own restaurant.

Ina loved to travel and went to Texas, California, Florida, and Canada before moving to Alaska for seven years. She moved back to Harlan and lived in the Westridge Apartments and Hawkeye Court before moving to Jewell, Iowa, in 2003.

She loved to do her crossword puzzles, play bingo with her friends and was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves.

Ina died on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa, having attained the age of 93 years, eleven months, and twenty-nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Norman "Rocky" Swensen, and sisters Dagny Svendsen, Christena Johnson, and Mae Heilig.

She is survived by her children: Sandra and her husband Jim Hansen of Wagoner, Oklahoma, Sally Smith of Chuluota, Florida, Bruce Carroll and his friend Ginny Jackson of Ames, Iowa, and Randy Carroll and his wife Paula of Jewell, Iowa; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; brother Donald Swensen and his wife Joann of Bellevue, Nebraska; sisters: Violet Fiscus of Kirkman, Iowa, Ethel Dent of Arkansas, and Joy Salmon and her husband Tom of Colorado Springs, Colorado; other family members and friends.

Rev. Eugene Petersen officiated the 1:30 PM funeral service at Grace Baptist Church on Friday, June 29, 2012 in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Darrell Johnson and Elliott Svendsen. Serving as casket bearers were Jim Swensen, David Whisinnand, Gary Heilig, Tom Heilig, Duane Swensen, and Dan Dent. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
