Survived by: Wife of 58 years, Mildred Whannell of Harlan, IA; son, Rex (spouse, Mary Kae) Whannell of Harlan, IA; daughter, Rhonda Brown and friend, Robert Andersen, of Harlan, IA; brothers, Donald (spouse, Yvonne) Whannell of Council Bluffs, IA, and Paul Whannell of Boone, IA; sisters, Doris (spouse, Robert) McCurley of KY, and Bette Grant of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Jeanna (spouse, Brian) McCullough of Goodyear, AZ, Jodi Brown of Omaha, NE, and Andrew Brown of Council Bluffs, IA; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Hugh and Agnes (nee Chalmers) Whannell

Education: attended country school near Missouri Valley, IA

Military service: U.S. Army, 1941-1945: 203rd Field Artillery. He landed on Omaha Beach with his unit and experienced combat on June 11, 1945, five days after D-Day.

Marriage: Mildred Leah Buck, Dec. 28, 1945, First Presbyterian Church, Shelby, IA

Employment: After their marriage, the couple farmed south of Shelby, IA until 1959, when they began farming near Harlan, IA. They moved to their current farm place located east of Harlan in 1969. In recent years, Bruce had to retire from farming because of poor health.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, First United Methodist Church, Harlan, IA; member, Shelby (IA) American Legion Post #240. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and playing pool at the Harlan Senior Center. He liked to play cards, particularly Solitare.
