Funeral services: Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, Defiance United Methodist Church, Defiance, IA; Rev. Keith Pals and Pastor Walter Bernard officiated. Burial was in the Union Township Cemetery in Defiance, IA.

Survived by: Son, Jim Tryon of Aurora, CO; daughters, Pat Papenheim of Des Moines, IA, and Luella (spouse, James) Bartelson of Anita, IA; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Elmer and Jessie (nee Wilson) McBride; husband of 44 years, James R. Tryon (deceased Feb. 21, 1985, Harlan, IA); sister, LaVerne Meyers

Education: graduated from Defiance (IA) High School, Class of 1929; attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, IA, for 1 year.

Marriage: James Riley Tryon, June 2, 1940, church parsonage in Defiance, IA.

Employment: After attending Teachers College, she taught country school for 9 years in Shelby County; after her marriage, she farmed with her husband near Defiance, IA, for 41 years. During this time, from 1971 until 1976, she and her husband also owned and operated a drive-in restaurant in Defiance, IA.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, Defiance United Methodist Church, Defiance, IA; member, Shelby County Extension Council; board member, Union Township Cemetery; member, Harlan Area Christian Women’s Club; active in 4-H; awarded Defiance Citizen of the Year in 1999. Enjoyed reading and doing cross-stitch.
