Funeral services: Last Rites on March 11, 2010; Wake Service: Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Neola, IA.; Mass of Christian Burial: Wednesday, March 17, 2010, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Neola, IA, followed by burial with military honors by Shelby AL Post 240 at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Neola, IA. Father Raphael A. Masabakhwa and Msgr. Lawrence A. Beeson, celebrants.

Predeceased by: parents, William Barron and Cecilia Helena (nee Dargin) Dea; siblings, James Dea, Robert Dea, Richard (Dick) Dea, Donald Dea, and Cecelia (Sis) Graeve; infant twin daughters, Diane and Delores Dea

Education: graduated from Shelby Consolidated School, Class of 1941

Religious affiliation: received Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Mary’s Church, Avoca, IA

Military service: March 1945 – August 1946: United States Marine Corps, stationed at both Parris Island, SC, and Camp LeJuene, NC; received training as a diesel mechanic (WWII ended before he was shipped out); while serving in the military, he spent time boxing and was a member of the church choir

Marriage: Helen Marcine Osbahr, March 19, 1945, Papillion, NE. Marriage was blessed by the Catholic Church in June 1945

Employment: 1941 – March 1945: Farmed with his father; Sept. 1946 – April 1947: Blue Star in Atlantic, IA; April 1947, farmed 120 acres owned by his father south of Minden, IA; 1950 – 1978, moved to another farm a mile farther south; also worked the graveyard shift for Stauffer’s Chemical Company in Omaha, NE.; 1978 – 1991, worked as an adjuster and insurance salesman for Federal Crop Insurance Company; 1981 – 1982, transferred to office in Des Moines, IA; in 1982, was transferred to office in Kansas City, MO., where he was put in charge of appeals; retired from that company in May 1991. He was then employed by American AgrInsurance, a subsidiary of the Redland Corporation in Council Bluffs, IA, and remained until his final retirement in June 2003. Resided in Shelby, IA, until a debilitating fall in September 2009, when he entered the Avoca Nursing Home.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, Shelby-Tennant School board for nine years and was board president for several years; member, board of Concerned, Inc, Harlan, IA; life-long member of the American Legion in Shelby, IA; member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Neola, IA, throughout his adult life. John was also instrumental in bringing LeadWay Corporation to Shelby.
