Virginia was born June 2, 1924 in Lismore, Minn., the eldest of two daughters of Edna and Roland Knips. She graduated from Worthington Senior High School in 1942. Virginia lived and worked in Seattle, Wash., and returned to Worthington to earn a degree in Office Management and Business Studies.

While attending college, she met her future husband, Harry D. Hussong. They were united in marriage on June 5, 1948, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family in June 2013. Throughout their marriage, Harry's career with the J.C. Penney Co. relocated the Hussongs to Sioux Falls and Yankton, S.D.; Norfolk, Neb.; Grundy Center, Webster City and Mason City, Iowa; Superior and Appleton, Wis.; and Bay City, Mich. After retirement, they moved to Bettendorf to live closer to family. Virginia and H.D. were devoted to raising their four children, three daughters and a son. Virginia was also an active member of church and women's circles throughout her life. She served as a longtime volunteer for PTA and community groups. Virginia was a rock for her family and friends, as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed. Cooking for friends and family, tending flowers, enjoying the beauty of nature and traveling brought her great joy.

She will be remembered for her love of family, gracious hospitality and a quiet strength of spirit.

Those left to honor Virginia's memory include her husband, Harry, of Bettendorf; children, Jana Hussong, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Dr. Dean Hussong and wife Ann, of Tomahawk, WI; Tamara Hermanson and husband Mark, of Bettendorf; Kim Hussong of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren, Chad Martin and wife Andrea; Jennifer Flores and husband Eduardo; Steffany Martin; Ryan Hussong; Brent Hussong and wife Kelly; Megan Casa de Calvo and husband Brandon; Katie Hardie and husband Dennis; seven great-grandchildren, Kylie Martin; Keoni Martin; Kaylani Martin; Camden Martin; Drew Flores; Brynn Hussong; and Austin Hardie; a sister, Beverly Kruse of Marlton, N.J. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, as well as great-granddaughter, Peyton Hardie.

The family expresses deep appreciation to Dr. James Darrow and the staff of Genesis Health Group-Eldridge Family Practice for their superb medical care, to the staff of Home Instead Senior Care and the Kahl Home for their kindness and compassion and to the pastors and staff of St. Paul Lutheran Church for their spiritual support.
