Sidney Elmer Butt, son of James and Mary Butt, was born in Edwards County IL, December 15, 1869, and departed this life April 11, 1951 at the age of 81 years.
When he was four years old the family moved to Indiana. At the age of fourteen he came to Iowa with the family traveling in a covered wagon. On the road an infant brother, Francis, died.
They encountered many other hardships as they made the journey. He was one of a family of ten children, five of whom are now living. They are John of Detroit MI, Theodore of Valley City ND, Sol of Peru IA, Ed and a sister Mrs. Pearl Ives of Diagonal. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marcia Yaryan, and three brothers, Charles, William and the infant brother.
He obtained his education in the public rural schools of Indiana and Iowa.
When seventeen he went out to make his own way, working at various occupations including railroading, carpentering, public road work and farming, and spent some time in the Dakotas. He served one term as night watchman in Shannon City. He was an Oddfellow of honorable standing for many years.
He joined the Methodist church of Diagonal during the pastorate of Charles Edmundson. Mr. Butt was a long time resident of the Diagonal community, having lived with his family on a farm north of town for many years. He built a residence for his family on the Pole Road where they enjoyed living, until moving to their home south of the Diagonal corner and Hiway 2. He had unusual vigor for a man of his years, taking care of his own farming operations and as late as last fall plowed gardens and husked corn for neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Nan, his two children Donald (Esther) Butt, and Grace Sackett (Burl), five grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Burial was in Knowlton cemetery.
