Edward Monroe Butt, son of James Aaron and Mary Eleanor Sprinkle Butt was born December 11, 1879 at Branchville, Perry County IN and passed away at Mt. Ayr IA August 2, 1962 at the age of 82 years.
The Butt family moved to Ringgold County IA in December of the year 1883, where he lived until his death, with the exception of one year in adjoining Union County. The family came from Indiana in two covered wagons crossing the Mississippi river by way of the railroad bridge at Keokuk IA.
Mr. Butt spent his early life on farms in the community and was later employed by the Chicago Great Western railroad as a member of the bridge crew. After moving to Diagonal in 1918 he was employed there by several business houses including several years at the Goodale Feed and Produce company. He was a longtime member of the IOOF lodge.
When he moved to Diagoanl the family included his father and his oldest brother, Willie, and he patiently cared for both of them for several years prior to their deaths.
He maintained an interest in the youth of the community especially in the area of sports. He also spent many hours listening to radio reports of sports events with a particular interest in baseball.
He is survived by a sister, Pearl Ives (Mrs. C.C) of Diagonal, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceided in death by his parents, a sister Marcia Yaryan, and seven brothers, William, John, Sidney, Charles, Theodore, Solomon and Francis.
