James Solomon Butt, son of James A and Mary E Butt, was born October 9, 1877, near Branchville, Perry County IN , and passed away March 22, 1960 in Winterset at the age of 82.
He came to Iowa in 1883 with his parents and other mambers of the family, making the long trip by covered wagon and was to spend most of his long and busy life in Ringgold, Union, and Madison counties in this state. He joined the Jefferson Methodist church when a young man.
He worked for the Chicago Great Western railroad nearly 40 years prior to his retirement in 1937, after which he continued other activities. He loved to garden, liked to travel and took pleasure in continuing his own family record in a family history begun by his brother, Willie.
He married March 16, 1903 to Goldie Baker at Diagonal IA and they were privileged to observe the golden anniversary of that event in 1953 with the children and grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death on May 4, 1958.
They were the parents of nine children, five of whom survive: Arthur of Sunnyvale CA, Clara Moore of Newberg OR, Anna Travis of Peru IA, Lena Howard of Winterset IA and Edna Andrews of Portland OR. Four children, Hazel, Floyd, Gladys, and Alta Jean preceded him in death.
Also five brothers and a sister preceded him: William, John, Theodore, Sydney, Charles, and Marcia as well as a granddaughter, Patricia Travis Kirk.
He is survived by 20 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, a brother Ed, and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Ives, both of Diagonal.
Funeral serviced were held in Winterset, with graveside services at the Knowlton cemetery.
