Richard C. Ives was born April 29, 1926 in Diagonal, Iowa, to O.R. (Pete) and Faye (Brown) Ives and departed this life on May 5, 1997 at his home in Miami, Florida at the age of 71 years.
Dick grew up in Diagonal attending the local school. He graduated with the class of 1943 where he was outstanding in sports. He continued his education at the University of Iowa where he earned All-American Honors in basketball
in the years 1944, 1945, and 1946. He led the Hawkeyes in scoring during these three years. His best season was his freshman season when he averaged 18.2 points per game. Included in that season was a 43 point game against Chicago.
Dick's freshman scoring average remains the best in Iowa history. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979.
Upon graduation from college he married Joan Newton and managed a hardware store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Soon after the birth of his daughter, Susan, they moved to Miami where he went to work at the Ready Potato Company. He
retired and sold his portion of the business after 42 years of service. Even after his retirement in February of this year he continued to assist in the operation of the company.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, O.R. (Pete) Jr. and Max. Left to mourn his passing are his daughter, Susan and husband John Parilla; granddaughters, Deanna and Emily Parilla; and grandsons, John and Anthony Parilla, all of Coral Springs, Florida; and his companion of 14 years, Paula Horton of Miami, Florida.
Services were held at the United Church of Diagonal on May 9, 1997.
Officiating was Rev. Pam Farren. Casketbearers were Dave Danner, Murry Weir, Charlie Mason, Bob Schulz, Ned Postels, Jack Spencer, and Dutch Schlesselman.
Interment was in Diagonal Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home.
