OBITUARY ~ JAMES SAMUEL SPURRIER

James Samuel SPURRIER, eldest son of Samuel Franklin and Margaret WICKHAM SPURRIER, was born December 11, 1874, on a farm near Lenox, Iowa. A little later the family moved to Clearfield where he grew to manhood. On June 9, 1896, he and Helen HAATHORNE (sic, should be HAWTHORNE), of Clearfield, were united in marriage and their home was immediately established in Mount Ayr where it has since remained.

Five children were born to this union and grew to maturity. The eldest, Harry Samuel, passed away in Los Angeles, California, September 12, 1929. There remains Margaret (Mrs. Carl TENNANT) of Long Beach, California; Helen (Mrs. Lester D. WIESE) of Manning; Franklin and Myrtle (Mrs. Forest L. STEWART) of Mount Ayr. The grandchildren are Barbara and Dorothy TENNANT, Sam and Gene WIESE, Ann and Ellen SPURRIER, David, Helen and Stephen STEWART.

The surviving brothers are Harry F., Zene, Paul and Carroll of Long Beach, California; Roy of Mount Ayr, and Albert of Clearfield. A sister, Mrs. Stanley WEBSTER, resided in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Mr. SPURRIER has been identified with newspaper work for forty-five years. In 1895 he entered the employ of TEDFORD and Son, publishers of the Ringgold Record edited in Mount Ayr. Later a partnership of TEDFORD and SPURRIER was formed. In 1907 the consolidation of the Ringgold Record and Twice-A-Week News was effected, and in 1911 he became sole owner of the paper, the Record News

For the past two years Mr. SPURRIER has been in poor health, suffering from angina pectoris. He passed away Friday morning, November 8, following a heart attack at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston.

NOTE: Interment was made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
