OBITUARY ~ GEORGE W. RAINS.

George W. RAINS was born at New Columbia, Madison county, Indiana, on the 24th of March, 1937. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. L. YEATER, in St. Joseph, Mo., on the 20th of Decembe, 1920, aged 83 years, 8 months and 26 days.

He was one of a family of six children, all of whom but two, Asa RAINS of Grant township, and a sister, Mrs. Jane DANIELS, living in Montana, have gone to great beyond some years past. The family moved to Ringgold county in 1855 and settled in Old Marshalltown, a pioneer town of the county, near where Benton is now located. He lived in the county continuously until a few years ago when he went to make his home with this daughter where he died.

He was married to Sarah BALDWIN at Martinsville, Mo., in 1850. She passed to her reward in 1869, survived by one child, Mrs. H. L. YEATER, two childen having died in infancy.

In 1870 he was married to Helen A. BROWN who passed away just two months and two weeks ago. Two children were born to this union, Laura who died in infancy, and George H. who survives.

Mr. RAINS was on of the pioneer teachers of this county, teaching for a number of years in many of the schools. He was a member of the lodge of I.O.O.F. of this city [Mount Ayr] for over forty years.

During the war of the rebellion he served in the Union army as a member of the Missouri state troops, stationed at St. Joseph, Mo., during the war, at the close of which he was honorably discharged.

For some years his health had been failing but at the end his death came as a shock. One of the oldest pioneers of the county, one of the earliest of the school teachers of the community, one of the few old soldiers left, his going marks the passing of a good citizen.

Funeral services were conducted at the home of his son, George H. RAINS, by S. P. WILLIAMSON, pastor of the Church of Christ, this forenoon at 10:30 o'clock. The remains were interred by the brother Odd Fellows in Rose Hill cemetery.
