OBITUARY ~ EDWARD SHAY CONWELL
September 11, 1921 ~ April 10, 2010

Edward Shay CONWELL, a longtime resident of Beaverton, died Saturday in St. Vincent Medical Center. He was 88-years-old.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home. 2308 Pacific Ave., in Forest Grove. A reception will follow at the funeral home followed by a graveside service in Forest View Cemetery.

The son of Edward and Callista (SHAY) CONWELL [formerly of Maloy, Iowa], Edward Shay CONWELL was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Red Lodge, Mont., where he grew up and received his education, graduating from Red Lodge Union High School.

He attended Montana State Normal College for two years before entering the Army, in which he served until November 1945 in the Aleutian Islands as an aircraft equipment repairman and inspector.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to college in Greeley, Colo., and the University of Montana in Missoula, where he earned a bachelor's degree.

He worked as a school superintendant and principal in Roberts, Mont., before moving to Portland in 1960. While living in Portland, he taught building construction at Benson High School for 26 years before retiring in 1986.

On July 14, 1975, he married Emelie Mae (WILLIS) AITKEN in Portland, where they made their home until moving to Beaverton in 1988.

Mr. CONWELL enjoyed spending his free time fishing, hunting, woodworking, gardening and reading the newspaper for hours.

Survivors include his wife Emelie Mae CONWELL of Beaverton; step-daughter Carol STEWART of Portland; one brother and two sisters. He also is survived by grandchildren Brandi STEWART-WOOD, Todd STEWART, Timothy SMITHER and Holly GRAHAM; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial donations in his name to the American Cancer Society, in care of St. Vincent Medical Center, 9205 S.W. Barnes Road, Portland 97225.
