OBITUARY ~ SHELLIE SAMUEL SCOTT

Shellie Samuel SCOTT, son of Harrison Empson and Cora Ellen BURGESS SCOTT, was born June 28, 1909 at Happy Hollow, Decatur County, Iowa. He was the youngest of seven children. Shellie passed away, after a long illness, October 5, 1985 in the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 76 years, three months and seven days.

On April 30, 1944, Shellie was united in marriage to Ethelene May OGIER of Kellerton at the home of her grandparents, Joseph and Lena BOHALL, in Lamoni. One daughter, Twilla May, was born to them on March 9, 1945. She married William DILLARD and they have one daughter, Heather Michele.

Shellie attended country school in Decatur County, including several years at Evergreen School. He spent his life farming, living earlier in Decaur County until he moved onto his farm in Riley Township, Ringgold County, Iowa, in 1940. During the fall of 1984, Shellie and Ethelene moved to Indianola, Iowa where his daughter and family lives. Almost daily visits from his family, especially his beloved granddaughter, Heather, gave him great joy.

During his lifetime, he was affiliated with the Republican Party, having spent over 40 years as a member of the election board in Riley Township. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing with friends and neighbors; and reading, especially about early American History.

As a young many, his devotion and care for his aging parents was constant and untiring.

SHellie comes from Pioneer stock whose families moved to Ringgold County during the 1800's. His great-grandparents were among the first families to establish a home in Cross, later to become Kellerton.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Leo, who died at the age of 17; and three sisters: Mary (Mmrs. Robert PHILLIPPE) of Columbia, Missouri; Meryle (Mrs. Henry ARTEAGO) of Chicago, Illinois; and Hattie (Mrs. Clyde SPIDLE) of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ethelene; daughter Twilla; son-in-law, Bill; granddaughter, Heather; two sisters, Mona (Mrs. Roy LEONARD) of Lamoni and Cleo (Mrs. Leland ELSTON) of Pittsville, Wisconsin, a twin of Leo; and a host of nephews, nieces cousins and friends.

Services were held October 9, 1985 from the United Methodist church at Kellerton, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Walter ZARR and Rev. Norman NOBLE. Music was provided by Mrs. Merrill PERRY and Mrs. Jim JONES.

Casketbearers were True BOYER, Wendall HILL, Joe Jr. BOYER, Steve SWIGART, William SWANK and Lawrence SWANK. Honorary pallbearers were Fred WERNER, Cloyd LEEPER, Ray POTTORFF and Bob RICHARDSON. Burial was in the Maple Row Cemetery at Kellerton, Iowa.
