OBITUARY ~ ERNEST H. SAWYER

Ernest H. SAWYER, son of William Van SAWYER and Florence Nettie VAUGHN SAWYER, was born in Poe Township on January 4, 1897, and died at the age of 87 in the Clearview Nursing Home on June 14, 1984.

Ernest lived in the early part of his life in Ringgold County, where he married Opal JENNINGS. To this union were born two children, Barbara Eileen, and Max Elton, who was killed in France during World War II.

Ernest moved with his family to Detroit, where he worked for the post office. After the death of his wife, Opal, in 1928, he continued to live in Detroit, where he married Stella K. BOYD in 1934. Upon his retirement from the post office Ernest and Stella bought a farm in Homer, Michigan, and lived there for 27 years. Prior to returning to Mount Ayr, they lived in Benton, Arkansas.

Ernest was a member of the First Christian Church of Mount Ayr. He served in the army during World War I, and spent a year in France. He was active in the Letter Carriers Union, serving as president for many years. He also served as president of the Michigan Farmers Union.

Ernest was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and had a deep concern for all people.

He will be mourned by his wife, Stella; his daughter, Barbara, and son-in-law, Roger ROHN (RENN?), of Allentown, Pa., and his four grandchildren: Stephen RENN and family, of Paolia, Pa., Diane THEODORE and husband, Dane, of Kendall, Florida, Richard RENN of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Doug RENN and wife, Connie of Meyerstown, Pa., and great-grandson, Timothy RENN.

Ernest will be missed by his two brother-in-law, Wilbur FARIS and Victor THOMPSON, and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Wilson-Watson Funeral Home, Mount Ayr, Iowa, on Saturday, June 16, 1984. Officiating was Rev. Doris KINTON. Music was by Mrs. Robert THOMAS, Mrs. Jim JONES and Mrs. Robert FISHER.

Casketbearers were Lee FARIS, Stephen RENN, Douglas RENN and Doyle STAMPER. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
