OBITUARY ~ EDWARD DALE "ED" LUTZ

CEDAR RAPIDS IA - Edward "Ed" Dale LUTZ, 79, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center from cancer and COPD.

He was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Kellerton, Iowa, to Boyd and Veva Valetta COVERDALE LUTZ. He graduated from Las Animas High School in 1949. He married Dorothy Mae SCHLICHTING on Nov. 12, 1944, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Artesian, Iowa. Ed served his country in Korea in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was baptized at Las Animas, confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Artesian, and was currently a member at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He was a volunteer auxiliary police officer in Waterloo during the turbulent 1960s and past member and president of the school board at Immanuel Lutheran School.

He enjoyed cruising around Robinson Crusoe and Exchange parks in Waterloo on his Cushman 4-wheeler as park ranger. He was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking and making lawn art for the family, hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandsons.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children, Tim (Sharlene), Tony (Barb), Tammy, Annette and Anita (Wayne); grandchildren, TJ (Erica), Emily, Heidi, Erik, Kiersten, Tori and Bryce; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew; siblings, Gene (Carolyn) and Bill (Phyllis); in-laws, Jean (Maurice), Martin (Fran), Darrel (Nancy), Nona, Sue and Gerald; and 39 nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Tommy, Bob and Jim and sisters, Georgia Lee, Naomi, Shirley and Mable.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 1 at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Craig BROWN Teahen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
