The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1922

OBITUARY - MRS. W. H. SWANK.

Josephine Amanda PHILLIPS was born October 22, 1847, at Otterville Mo., and departed this life November 8, 1922, at the home of her son, Lewis, near Kellerton, Iowa, aged seventy-five years and twenty days.

Her marriage to William H. H. SWANK took place June 14, 1866, at Otterville, Mo., and to this union twelve children were born. Three died in infancy and in 1908, one daughter, Mrs. E. H. HIGDAY, died near Kellerton, Iowa. In 1920 Wesley SWANK passed away in Greeley, Colo., this leaving five sons and two daughters to survive the mother. Mr. SWANK died March 4, 1915. The surviving children are Kittie R. CHANCE of Wichita Falls, Texas; W. S. SWANK, of Canfield, Colo.; Walter E. SWANK, of Shannon City, Iowa; Mrs. Lottie E. LAIRD, of Indianola, Iowa; L. E. SWANK, of Kellerton, Iowa; Orville E. SWANK, of Gravity, iowa; and Frank P. SWANK, of Mount Ayr, Iowa. All of the fmaily were able to be home during her year's sickness except one son, Sherman, in Colorado. She is also survived by thirty-four grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Mrs. SWANK united with the M. E. church at Wishard Chapel in 1885, and twenty-four years ago became a member of the Methodist church in Mount Ayr, of which she has been a loyal member. She was of a very quiet disposition, never complaining of her suffering, neither did she seem to realize that the end was so near. She gladly welcomed the visits of her neighbors and friends often speaking of the most sincere and sympathetic tenderness shown her.

Her family have the recollection that they have cared for her during the time of weakness and illness with every loving attention that could be given and they have the remembrance of one who was a good and honorable mother and an example to her children.

The funeral was held Friday at the M. E. church in Mount Ayr and was conducted by the pastor Rev. Jay KIRKENDALL.
