DONALD EDWARD SNYDER

Donald Edward SNYDER, youngest child of Carl A. & Florence (KEITH) SNYDER was born July 16, 1930 at Bedford, Iowa.

He departed this life on April 12, 2008 at his home in Diagonal under the care of his loving family.

Don spent his school years in the Bedford school system graduating with the class of 1949. Following graduation he spent a four year tour with the U.S. Navy. Following this tour he moved to Diagonal, Iowa where he worked with his brother H. J. at the Diagonal Hatchery. While in Diagonal he also served as bus driver for the Diagonal School and worked for a time at Maytag Appliance in Winterset.

It wasn’t all work for Don while in Diagonal as it was at this time he met and fell in love with Myrtle Ann HOLLINGER. They were joined in matrimony on June 5, 1955 at the Diagonal Christian Church. This union was blessed with 2 sons and 3 daughters.

In 1958 Don felt the call to duty again and reenlisted in the Navy where he was an Aviation Electricians Mate serving at various stations in California until his retirement in 1974, after serving nearly 22 years for his country. After retirement still feeling the call to duty, Don took a position with Comarco, in Ridgecrest, CA writing manuals for the Sidewinder and Sparrow missile programs.

In 1992 Don suffered from a heart attack and had a triple by-pass. From that point he suffered from many surgeries and illnesses. Without loosing his sense of humor, Don and Myrt moved back to Diagonal in 1994. He enjoyed western movies, especially his hero John Wayne "a man's got to do what a man’s got to do" was Don’s favorite quote. He also enjoyed a game of cards with Myrt's family. However, above all Don enjoyed his family and the "Grand Puppies" brought many hours of enjoyment.

Through the years Don enjoyed his memberships with the VFW, Fleet Reserve, Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge (PWP) and the Diagonal Lions.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Doris CROY and Aneth LUCKSINGER; brothers, Lex and Carl Jr.; an infant great-granddaughter; and his father and mother-in-law Hazel and Miles.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Myrtle of Diagonal; sons, Don E. and wife Cindy of Venton, IA and Jack E. and wife Katherine of Diagonal; daughters, Pamela Jean and husband Lee WATSON and Laura Lee and husband Sidney DAVIS all of Hanford, CA and Kelly Ann and husband Curtis TRACEY of Waverly, IA; 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren his sister, Dorothy NASH of Sheridan, MO and brother Harold J. and wife Irene SNYDER of Diagonal; brothers-in-law Harold and wife Hildred HOLLINGER, Robert and wife Marie HOLLINGER and Ernest "George" and wife Marilyn HOLLINGER; and sister-in-law Ginny and husband K.
