OBITUARY - ED. O. SMITH.

Edward Oscar SMITH, son of John and Susan SMITH, was born May 30, 1873, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and departed this life at his home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, October 26, 1932, at the age of 59 years, four months and 26 days.

When a young man 18 years of age he located in Mount Ayr and three years later in 1894, was united in marriage with Miss Sylvia E. WARNER. To this union four children were born, two daughters and two sons, all of whom are living. The wife and mother died May 31, this year. For a number of years after locating in Mount Ayr Mr. SMITH was employed as a mason and bricklayer and it was while he was engaged in doing some repair work on the old court house in Mount Ayr in the year 1903 that the scaffold on which he was working gave way and he fell from the second story to the tile floor below, sustaining injuries to his spine as a result of which he was unable to walk without the use of crutches the remainder of his life and in the later years of his life he made his way to and from his place of business in a wheel chair.

Despite the physical handicap resulting from the injury, Mr. SMITH courageously applied himself to making a living for himself and family, opening a shoe shining parlor and later for a number of years conducted a clothes cleaning establishment. His industry and courage and cheerful disposition were admired by all who knew him.

About two years ago he was compelled to give up his work and has since lived in retirement, making only occasional trips uptown. His critical illness covered a period of about two weeks and the end came peacefully.

The surviving children are Mrs. Lillian TWAY, Omaha, Neb.; George E. SMITH, Sioux City, Iowa; Orville SMITH, Mount Ayr, and Mrs. Goldie HAMMER, Grant City, Mo.

Funeral services for Mr. SMITH were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Rhoades Funeral Home, being conducted by Rev. E. S. MENOHER, pastor of the Methodist church, and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.
