OBITUARY - LESTER ERLE SHOWALTER

Lester Erle SHOWALTER, the young man who was killed in the collapse of the Smith Building last Wednesday night, was born in Ringgold County, Iowa, January 11th, 1885, died in Grant City, October 29th, 1902, aged 17 years, 9 months and 18 days. In September 1901 he went to Leon, Iowa, to attend school, living with his sister, Mrs. W. P. MARSHALL until the arrival of his parents, February, 1902.

About the first of October he came to Grant City to attend school, residing with his sister, Mrs. Ernest EWING. The Leon school having been condemned, was torn down, and the young man was continuing his studies here at the time of his sudden and untimely demise. He leaves parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. J. SHOWALTER, of Leon, two brothers, the older Hugh, living at Salem, Oregon; Ernest, the younger at Fort Morgan, Colorado; three sisters, Mrs. W. P. MARSHALL, of Leon, Iowa; Mrs. Ernest EWING, of Grant City; Mrs. F. H. GLENN, of Kirksville, Mo., and a host of surrounding friends.

His father who had been in Baldwin, Kansas, attending the funeral of Rev. James SHOWALTER, his brother, was apprised of the death of his son while on his return at Kansas City, from a daily paper. The entire family except Hugh, detained by sickness, attended the funeral at Hickory Grove, in Ringgold County, Iowa, Saturday, November 1st, Elder HATCH, of Leon, conducting the funeral.
