They lived on a farm just a little over a mile east of his folks. He farmed with his dad till the fall of 1969 when his folks moved to Mount Ayr. Then Eldon and Retha, along with son Eugene, moved over to the home place.

Eldon drove a school bus for Mount Ayr Community School for a few years then, in later years after they moved to town, he worked at the bus barn for a couple of years under the Green Thumb program. He gave his life to Christ in the 50’s at the United Methodist Church in Benton, later to the Mount Ayr Free Methodist Church where he was the superintendent for many years. He was on the official board till his death. He was a Farm Bureau member for over 50 years and a faithful member of the board till about a year before his death. He loved going to the Iowa State Fair and camping beside his family for the entire fair for 20 years. He enjoyed working for the State Fair for 15 years parking cars by Grandfather’s Farm. For two years they owned and operated the Red Carpet Diner on the east side of Mount Ayr. He worked at DUGAN’s Conoco for few years till it closed. Eldon enjoyed going to coffee every morning and afternoon at the sale barn till it closed. Later, due to health reasons, it was just in the afternoons only but he never wanted to miss being with the coffee club at Breadeaux and then later at Peggy Sue’s.
