OBITUARY - MARY JANE (HENSLEY) DENNEY

Mary Jane DENNEY, daughter of George Washington and Cora Belle (MAUDLIN) HENSLEY was born January 29, 1921 in Worth County, Missouri and departed on August 2, 2007 at Mount Ayr Health Care Center.

Mary Jane grew up on farms in Worth and Ringgold counties throughout her life. She attended country school through 8th grade at the Jackson school in Worth County.

On June 1, 1940, Mary Jane was united in marriage to Lester Milo DENNEY. They were married for 26 years prior to his passing in 1968. To this marriage they were blessed with 3 children; Beverly, Julia, and Jim. The couple lived the majority of their years on the family farm southwest of Mount Ayr.

Mary Jane was a member of the Middlefork Methodist Church throughout her life, over the years she worked on the wheat harvest, Mount Ayr Cap Factory, Shamrock Café, drove many miles reading meters for REC, and at the Mount Ayr Elementary School.

Mary Jane’s life was full of hard work at all of her jobs. Tending to her flowers, the garden, and cattle took up countless summer hours. After Lester’s passing, she continued with their cattle operation. In the spring, Mary Jane especially enjoyed watching the baby calves bounce around the pasture.

Grandma MJ, as she was called by her great grandchildren, had a witty sense of humor. Countless jokes can be remembered by us all.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband Lester; brothers; Walter Lester (Bessie), Wayne Everett (Ruby), and Verl (Nellie) HENSLEY; sisters; Sadie (Ernest) BLACK, Belle (Clarence) WILSON, and Vera HENSLEY; son-in-law Bill SHELMAN.

Those left to cherish her memory are Beverly (Walt) McGINNIS of Mount Ayr, Julie DENNEY-SHELMAN of Kansas City, MO, and Jim (Karen) DENNEY of Mount Ayr; five granddaughters Karla (Carl) TAYLOR, Kimberly (Randy) FOSTER all of Omaha, NE, Jamie (Ben) ISRAEL of Mount Moriah, MO, Dr. Jody (Dr. Shad) ENGLAND of Granger, IA and Jill (Eric) EHLEN of Mount Ayr; 9 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Nadine HENSLEY. Mary was especially looking forward to the birth of her tenth great-grandchild in September.

Services were held on Monday, August 6, 2007, at 10:30 a.m., Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
