MRS. PORTER DIES;
SERVICES TODAY

Mrs. Lena C. Porter, 86, of 932 Park St., died Monday afternoon at a local hospital, following an extended illness.

The daughter of Samuel and Mary Creighton Jacob, she was born Aug. 1, 1881, in Washington Township, Poweshiek County, and received her education in the rural schools of this community.

On November 29, 1905, she was united in marriage with Melvin A. Porter at Ewart and following their marriage they farmed in the Ewart and Jacob Switch communities until 1912 when they moved to Grinnell. She was a life-long resident of this community with the exception of a few years when she lived in Clinton, Iowa, and served as hostess at the Pythian Sisters Home.

Mrs. Porter was a member of the Grinnell Methodist church and a charter member of the Pythian Sisters, having received her 50-year pin four years ago.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. R.H. (Charlotte) Fair of Spencer, Iowa; her son, Keith Porter of Grinnell; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Agnes Kline of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in January of 1931, and a brother, Guy Jacob.

Funeral services for Mrs. Porter were held this morning (Thursday) at 11:00 at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester E. Custer officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Township cemetery at Ewart. Fraternal services were conducted by the Pythian Sisters, Grinnell Lodge No. 198.

Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Ray G. Myers, Carl Paxson, Harry Bitcon, William Bitcon, John Hotchkin, and Jerome Slebiska. Honorary pallbearers were Omar Olson, Charles Hink, and Ed Speth.
