Longtime Local Resident Dies
Services held here Sunday for G. H. Bierbaum
Death removed a longtime resident of the Griswold community last Wednesday night in the passing of G. H. Bierbaum of this city. Mr. Bierbaum passed away at the Murphy Memorial hospital in Red Oak, where he had been a patient about a week. Mr. Bierbaum had been quite poorly the past year and gradually declining in strength.
Gerhard Henry Bierbaum was born in Clayton County, Iowa, near Guttenberg on December 31, 1865, being the son of the late Gerhard Henry and Caroline Walke Bierbaum. At his passing Mr. Bierbaum had reached the advanced age of 87 years and 7 days. Mr. Bierbaum came to Cass County as a young man on March 7, 1890, and located on the farm, two and a half miles southeast of Griswold, which has been the family home until a year ago. Mr. Bierbaum erected a new home in Griswold and moved into this city at that time. On September 26, 1893, Mr. Bierbaum was united in marriage to Anna Matilda Anderegg at Guttenberg. This marriage was blessed with four daughters and a son. They were Esther Verena, Emily Gertrude, Alma Caroline, Elmer Oscar, and Olivia Alta. Mr. Bierbaum was preceded in death by one daughter, Esther Patmont on July 20, 1925; and his beloved wife on January 24, 1933. Left to mourn his passing are four children: Emily Patmont of Berkeley, Calif.; Miss Alma of Griswold; Elmer of Cherokee, Iowa; and Mrs. Clark Garey of southeast of Griswold. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Margaret Bonker of Manley, Iowa and brother, J. Christopher Bierbaum of Garnavillo, Iowa, in addition to numerous other relatives and many friends. Mr. Bierbaum was a member of the Griswold Church of Christ and served that church as an elder and treasurer for many years.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Church of Christ in the city. Officiating was Rev. Ronald Cochran church pastor. The music was led by Mrs. Robert Christenson, Mrs. Robert Boseck, Gilbert Mueller and Kneedy Barnes, accompanied by Mrs. Alta Humphrey. Pallbearers were Edgar Hemphill, Floyd Sunderman, Duane Orton, Irvin Mueller, Carl Seaholz and Harlan Buroughs. Interment was made on the family lot in the Griswold Cemetery.
