Charles Melvin "Mel" Lenze, 79, passed from this life on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at Adel Acres in Adel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 28, at First Christian Church in Adel. Burial will follow at Panther Creek Cemetery, rural Adel.

Mel was born on August 15, 1934, in rural Adel, to Charles William and Coral Grace (Coffin) Lenze. From 1953 to 1956, he served with the National Guard. For many years, Mel was owner and operator of Lenze Backhoe Service. In 1994, Mel was united in marriage to Ruby (Meacham) Schultze and they made their home in Adel. He enjoyed farming, helping others, and loving and teasing his grandchildren. Mel will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Ruby Lenze; son, Randy Lenze; daughter, Sheila Lenze Lister; stepsons, Rick (Rose) Breuss, David (Chris) Breuss, Kevin (Lori) Schultze, and Brent (Deb) Cooper; stepdaughter, Barbara Christensen; sister-in-law, Sue Lenze; brother-in-law, Bob Crowl; and 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mel was preceded into eternal life by his parents; wife, Betty Breuss Lenze; two brothers, Curtis Lenze and Billy Lenze; two sisters, Charlotte Bond and Connie Crowl; one daughter, Cindy Lenze-Wingfield; and one stepdaughter, Susan Cooper.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, at Iles Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to the Mel Lenze Memorial Fund.
