Raymond Eugene "Curly" Burkhart, 89, passed from this life on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Arbor Springs Care Center, in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 7, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Curly was born to John and Mattie (Johnson) Burkhart on November 5, 1922 in Cambridge, Iowa. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. He was formerly employed with the Ammunition Plant in Ankeny until joining the Navy. On December 15, 1944, Curly married Alice Lorraine Friar in Colo, Iowa. He was Administrator of Woodland Nursing Home and also farmed in Williams, IA and later owned a bowling alley in Jewell, IA.

Curly was always an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the San Francisco Giants. His loves were fishing, golf, woodworking and family. Curly had a passion for the outdoors and sports of all kinds. He was a master ping pong and billiard player. He loved hunting and was an excellent fisherman. Curly kept his acreage manicured like a fine golf course. Grandchildren were always his pride and joy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alice Burkhart; daughter, Evelyn Ann Rude; sons, Raymond and Mark; grandchildren, Terry Ann Leonard, and John, Josh, Ashlie, Jason and Abbie Burkhart; two great-grandchildren, Solana and Summer Leonard; and brother, John Burkhart. Curly was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Evelyn Waldman.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, March 6, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to either the Alzheimer's Association - Greater Iowa Chapter or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
