James A. Wheeler, 90, passed away Monday, June 18, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born January 3, 1922, in Des Moines, the son of James and Marjorie (Koethe) Wheeler.

James proudly served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a Commercial Artist in Newton, Des Moines, and the Minneapolis area. After retirement, he volunteered at a number of local non-profit organizations, as well as Mercy Hospital and his church.

James was an active member of Ankeny First United Methodist Church, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, and Masonic Lodge #636 in Ankeny.

James is survived by his four children, Roberta Brookshire of Atlanta, Georgia, Steve Wheeler of Fullerton, California, Al (Kate) Wheeler of Ankeny, and Terri (Jim Clifford) Barreiro of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and his younger brother, Lawrence Wheeler. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Arlene Wheeler.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with funeral services beginning at 7 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mill Pond Retirement Community, 1201 SE Mill Pond Court, Ankeny, Iowa 50021, in loving memory of James.
