John T. Smith

John passed away September 9 at IMMC in Des Moines after a short courageous battle with cancer.

John was born in Ottumwa, IA on September 22, 1931. He graduated from Ottumwa Catholic Central and attended St. Ambrose College. He married Barbara Morris in 1965. Barbara and her current spouse, Verlin Anderson of South Carolina came to Des Moines to be his last caregivers.

He is survived by his son, Patrick of Morgantown, WV; and sister, Rosa Bendlage-Nevins of Ottumwa, and many close and loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter E. and Alice Smith.

John spent his career with Motorola Communications & Electronics and for the past five years had worked as an Ambassador at Willis Auto Campus in Des Moines. A service will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Ottumwa, on September 20 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers masses may be offered at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Des Moines.
