Former Mayor of Akron Dies; Rites Saturday
AKRON, Iowa – Special: Vinton Adams, 75, a former mayor of Akron, died unexpectedly
at his home Thursday morning.
Mr. Adams, an implement dealer in Akron from 1942 until his retirement in 1951,
served two terms as mayor and also as a councilman. He was commander of Hoschler
Post, American Legion for many years. He was a 50-year member and past master of
Freedom Lodge 434 AF & AM, a member of the Akron Eastern Star, and a 50-year member
of the Sioux city Consistory, having served on its degree team.
He was born Oct. 22, 1894, at Akron. He married Helen Cobb Feb. 2, 1916, at Akron.
The couple farmed near Akron before moving into town.
Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. W. H. CopasAdams Helen Janet of Fountain
Valley, Calif,; two sons, John of Setauket, N. Y., and Charles of Walnut Creek,
Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Akron First Baptist Church.
The Rev. Michael Strom will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. A
prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the Schroeder Funeral Home.

===============================FORMER AKRON MAYOR DIES SUDDENLY LAST THURSDAY MORNING
Numbers of friends and relatives that taxed the seating capacity of the First Baptist Church in Akron come to pay their last respects to Vinton G Adams, an esteemed lifelong resident of this community, who died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home last Thursday forenoon. Prior to last Thursday Mr. Adams had seemed in apparent good health having attended the noon meeting of the Akron Commercial Club on Wednesday. He was stricken suddenly at his home Thursday morning just shortly after having returned from getting the mail at the post office.
Mr. Adams was born in Akron on October 22, 1894, and grew to manhood here and attended the Akron Public Schools. He married Helen Cobb on February 2, 1916, at Akron, and they farmed in Union County, S. D. for a number of years before moving to Akron. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War I, and was a charter member of Hoschler Post, No. 186, American Legion, and served as Commander of the local post three years as well as county adjutant and county commander. Mr. Adams was a fifty-year member of Freedom Lodge, No. 434, A. F. & A. M., served as Worshipful Master of that order and for many years held the position of District Lecturer. He was a member of Vesper Chapter, No. 61, Order of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Patron of that order. For fifty years he was a member of the Fifth Degree team made up of Akron members of the Consistory. For his long years of untiring service in the Consistory he was named the K. C. C. H. honor group.
In civic life Mr. Adams was a competent and tireless worker serving as a member of the Akron town council and later as mayor for three terms during which time many important civic improvements were realized. Among his many civic contributions was his work toward the establishment of the first community hospital, serving as chairman of the original hospital board. He also served as president of the Akron Commercial Club and took an active part in that organization all during the time he resided in Akron.
Vint, as he was familiarly known by most of his acquaintances, was a great lover of the outdoors, and was a real sportsman, fishing and hunting being his favorite hobbies. He also took a great deal of interest in the flooding problem of the Big Sioux river in this region, and was instrumental in attracting government attention to the flood control needs on the stream. He was also la leader in soil conservation work in this area.
Mr. and Mrs. Adams moved from their farm to Akron in 1937 and Vint then engaged in the implement business here until his retirement in 1951.
Survivors include the widow, a daughter, Mrs. W. H. Copas, of Fountain Valley, Calif.; two sons, John, of Setauket, N. Y., and Charles, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Jans and Mrs. S. E. Siebens, of Akron, and Mrs. Eva Christy, of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Enid, and two sons, Edward and Robert.
Funeral services at the First Baptist Church in Akron Saturday afternoon were conducted by Rev. Michael Strom. The vocal selection, “Still, Still With Thee” was sung by Richard Smith, with Mrs. Henning Shoulberg organist.
Pallbearers were three grandsons, Keith Gabel, Dick Adams, Jerome Adams; a nephew, James Sears, and Walter Dirks, Arden Johnson, Lyle F. Jacobs and Floyd Davis. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by members of Freedom Lodge, No. 434, A. F. & A. M., with Charles Howard, secretary of the Sioux City Consistory, serving as Worshipful Master.
The community joins in extending heartfelt sympathy to the members of the Adams family in their bereavement.
