Born on January 18, 1935, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, Norma Jean lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service. She was a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church in Andover, MN where she found joy in worship, fellowship, and community outreach. She also was a member of the Coon Rapids Lions and involved in other local sports organizations for her children when they were younger.
Norma Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald, her parents Oscar and Alta (Zeigler) Norland, and siblings Marietta Sampson (Ellsworth), Donald Norland (Lois), Allen Norland (Bonnie), Martin Norland (Arnetta), and Myrna Nord (James).
She is survived by son, Kim Reed (Kathy) of Le Mars, IA; daughter, Dawn (Chris) of Marana, AZ; granddaughter, Maggie Hoffman (Corey); grandson, Sam Van Wettering (Megan); five great grandchildren; 39 treasured nieces and nephews.
Norma Jean grew up on the family farm in Titonka, IA. She was a cheerleader, played the clarinet, enjoyed farm life with siblings, and loved activities with classmates. She was confirmed at Good Hope Lutheran Church and continued to live her life as a faithful Christian. Norma Jean’s love of children led her to earn a teaching certificate from St. Cloud State University and was a first grade and preschool teacher for several years. She retired in 2006 from a 20-year tenure in Target’s electronic department, loving her service with her younger counterparts and customers alike. She met Donald at an event during high school and knew she would one day marry him. After he returned from his service in the Navy, they married and moved to Coon Rapids in 1960, where they raised their family.
Norma’s greatest joy was family, cherishing being a mother, spending time with her siblings at family gatherings, and being the favorite aunt to several nieces and nephews. She was faithful in attending her children’s sporting, musical, and milestone events – she was their biggest fan. Norma’s hobbies included gardening, arts & crafts, and playing games of any kind. As anyone will attest, she was a formidable opponent, and joyful laughter was certain to be shared. Known for her genuine and heartfelt engagement with people, Norma Jean touched countless lives in her final decade living in the senior communities of Autumn Glen in Coon Rapids and Whispering Creek in Sioux City. Her home was always open and her love unconditional.
