Mary Anne Herbst, 100, of Merrill, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars, Iowa.

Private family services will be held at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will be held at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mary Anne Bremer, the daughter of Herman Sr. and Jennie (Mulder) Bremer, was born on July 22, 1924, in Merrill, Iowa. She grew up on a farm north of Merrill. She attended country school in Plymouth County.

She was united in marriage to Odie G. Herbst on Dec. 22, 1942, in Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple lived in Virginia for a short time while Odie was serving in the U.S. Navy. While in Virginia, Mary Anne worked as a waitress. Following his discharge, they returned to Merrill where they farmed. Early on, Mary Anne was a homemaker for her family. Later on, she went to work for Swift & Co. in Sioux City for 10 years. She then worked as a custodian at Wells Dairy in Le Mars and for the Le Mars Public Library until her retirement. Odie passed away on May 12, 1992. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars in May of 2020.
Mary Anne enjoyed fishing, gardening, quilting, and reading. She also enjoyed raising chickens and ducks. She sold eggs to many people over the years. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Harlan (Vikki) Herbst of Le Mars, Marlin (Myra) Herbst of Merrill, Darwin (Susann) Herbst of Merrill, Melvin Herbst of Merrill, and Norman (Mindy) Herbst of Merrill; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Herbst of Orange City, Iowa; her grandchildren, Jodi (Jeff) Grant, Dawn (Steve) Vujic, Gwen (Ryan) Lahrs, Holly (Adam) Peterman, Julie (Chris) Wilken, Bobbi (Michael) Smith, Paul (Jodie) Wielenga, Katie (Ryan) Held, Angela Herbst, and Michelle (Corey) Duckett; her granddaughter-in-law, Susie (Brian) Kleve; her great-grandchildren, Addison (Christopher) Hanson, Brailey Grant, Briar Lahrs, Becca Lahrs, Evan Peterman, Gabrielle Herbst, Alex Wilken, Grady Wilken, Julia Wielenga (fiancé, Jakob Anderson), Jacob Held, and Greyson Held; her great-great-granddaughter, Pearl Anderson; her brother, Herman Jr. (Beverly) Bremer of Le Mars; her sister-in-law, Pat Bremer of Akron, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Sr. and Jennie Bremer; her husband, Odie Herbst; her son, Elwin Herbst; her grandson, Randy Herbst; her brother, Arnold (Bernice) Bremer; her grandson-in-law, Jason Puetz; and her niece, Elaine Bremer Schuchard.
