Marlene Conner, 81, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Friday, October 13, 2023, at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Reverend Christian Meier from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home and following the service during a time of fellowship at the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 in Le Mars. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 Auxiliary in Le Mars.

Marlene Marie Frerichs, the daughter of Folkert “Folly” and Minnie Frerichs, in Grand Island, Nebraska. She grew up in the Le Mars, Iowa and Hawarden, Iowa area. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1960. After graduation, she lived in Sioux City for a short time before moving to Tampa, Florida.

While in Florida, she met Robert Conner. They were united in marriage on April 25, 1965, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. They lived in Lima and Uniopolis, Ohio for six years. They returned to Le Mars area in 1973. They lived on an acreage near Brunsville before moving to Le Mars in 1978. Marlene worked at Spurgeon’s Department Store and later at Brentwood Good Samaritan in Le Mars. She then went to work Dean Foods in Le Mars and retired in 2010.

She was lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She was a 43-year member of the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 Auxiliary, where she was a Past President. Her interest growing up was riding horses with her dad. She rode in many parades and participated in horse shows in the area. She and Robert enjoyed riding motorcycles over the years. She also enjoyed crocheting, camping, and line dancing.

Survivors include her husband of over 58 years, Robert of Le Mars; a daughter, Betty Jo (Tyrone) Arango of Orlando, FL; a daughter, Kathy (Hank) Thye of Dallas, TX; a grandson, Nathan Jacob of Las Vegas, NV; step grandchildren Ash, Lexi, and Haley; a “bonus” daughter, Sherri (Jack) Miller and their family from Le Mars, IA and several others; 2 brothers in law: Roger (Janet) Conner of Lima, OH, and Rusty (Phyllis) Conner of Leesburg, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Wallace Frerichs; her daughter, Laurie Conner; her granddaughter, Jazmyn Jacob; and a brother-in-law, Rolland Conner.

Marlene is coming on her horse, motorcycle, and scooter with a drink in her hand – “Here’s one for you!”
