June Adelaide Asplund Marty completed her life on earth and passed over into everlasting peace at 8:30 PM, Thursday, December 15, 2022 after a week of great care at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. She leaves behind a legacy of her love and gratitude for us to cherish.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. Leslie Neugent will officiate. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday the church. June donated her body to the Des Moines University Medical School. Interment will be at a later date in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.

June was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, the youngest of three children, to Otto and Karley (Erickson) Asplund on June 15, 1931. Her 1 through 12 education was all in the Bismarck School System but her social life during those years was with the youth of her Evangelical Church. Her church activity led her to attendance at her church denomination’s college, Westmar, in Le Mars, Iowa in the Fall of 1949. In that Freshman class, she met Wayne Marty. 1949 was a big year for Le Mars with that meeting of two young lovers, and the opening of both Bob’s Hot Dogs and Archie’s Waeside.

June and Wayne graduated from Westmar College in 1953 and Wayne was immediately drafted into the Korean War service. June taught fourth grade for her 1st year at Albert Lea, MN. June and Wayne were married on June 18, 1954, in her home Bismarck, ND church. They returned to Fort Leonard Wood,MO as a young married couple and lived in a small trailer home on the Fort Leonard Wood Post. There June taught Kindergarten part-time in a Post School.

After Wayne’s Army service they returned to Iowa. June’s “work for pay” during her life was minimal. Her support for Wayne’s education, professional growth, family, and the community was maximal. Together they built their “country home” near Le Mars in 1962 and it has been their home (although now within the City of Le Mars) for the last 60 years to this present day. During that time she hosted many Westmarstudents for ice cream parties, treasure hunts, faculty celebrations, riding sessions and buggy rides with the family horse, “Thunder”, as well as events with family and the kids’friends. June enjoyed her involvement in P.E.O., United Methodist Women, faculty wives’ gatherings and book club. She also enjoyed reading, baking, and gardening. June was always ready to volunteer at church and in the community, and she particularly enjoyed volunteering at the Christian Needs Center and Meals on Wheels.

The Marty family travelled a lot for family trips, Wayne’s sabbaticals and Westmar student excursions. Summer often found the family on lengthy car trips which covered 49 states. Wayne’s sabbatical and remote opportunities took the family to Georgia, New Mexico, Iowa City and the Philippines and Junewould arrange to “vacate” their house to renters while the family was away from Le Mars. She was a food manager and cook on many of the Westmar student trips, and when she couldn’t go along she remained at home to care for her family throughwinter blizzards and summer thunderstorms.

June was proud of her Norwegian and Swedish heritage. Her mother, Karley, immigrated from Norway alone at age 19. It is understandable that June often said in recent years, “I’m trett” (the Norwegian word for tired). Rest Well, Mom June. You deserve it.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Warren;her sister, Linnea (who died just one month ago), an infant child Ronald Peter, and a granddaughter Mette June Hentzen.

Loving survivors include her husband Wayne, and children, Alan (Cindy) Marty of Menlo Park, CA; Lynnae Marty Hentzen of West Des Moines, IA, and Michael Spiritfair Marty of Milwaukee, WI.; grandchildren Chris Marty, Karley (Jordan) Yoder, Rachel (Daniel) Pyke, Stijn (Josie) Hentzen, GrishamHentzen, and Sasha Hentzen; and great-grandchildren Rebecca Yoder, Wesley Hentzen, Elias Pyke, and Madelyn Yoder.
