AKRON GIRL DIES IN AUTO ACCIDENT ON NEW YEAR’S DAY

Rites Are Held For Barbara Ann Hisel Monday Afternoon

The gladness attending the arrival of a new year was shadowed by a tragedy that claimed the life of little Barbara Ann Hisel only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conley Hisel of this city, in an auto accident on New Year’s day.

Mr. and Mrs. Hisel and daughter had left just before noon in their auto to drive to the home of Mrs. Hisel’s sister, Mrs. Gilbert Wakeman, northeast of town, on Highway 12, for New Year’s dinner. Remembering he had some cards he had intended to mail, Mr. Hisel decided to return to town and started to make a left-hand turn into a farm driveway just north of Riverside cemetery when an auto descending the hill from the rear crashed into his car and overturned it throwing out the three occupants.

Barbara Ann was caught under a wheel of their car and instantly killed. Mrs. Hisel suffered a cracked pelvic bone, a neck injury and several minor injuries, and Harlan Buerman, 26, of West Point, Nebr., driver of the other car, sustained chest injuries.

A physician was called to the scene to give first aid, and Mr. and Mrs. Hisel and Mr. Buerman and his wife, who accompanied him, were conveyed to the Akron Community Hospital for medical attention. Mr. Buerman was taken to a hospital at West Point, Sunday. Mrs. Buerman and Mr. Hisel sustained only slight injuries and shock.

Betty (actually Barbara) Ann Hisel daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conley Hisel, was born in Akron, March 11, 1949, and died January 1, 1953, aged 3 years, 9 months and 21 days. Besides her parents, she survived by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Miller Hansen, of Akron, and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Hisel of Ashby, Nebr., and other relatives, all of whom have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in this and shocking bereavement.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran church, Pastor David J. Roy officiating. Mrs. Hugh Swift sang, with Mrs. Henning Shoulborg at the organ. Pallbearers were LeRoy and Lowell Carlson, Gary and Ray Grimes. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
