Arnold W. Hitzemann

AKRON, Iowa—Arnold “Arnie” W. Hitzemann, 74, of Sioux City, formerly of Akron, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998 at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services were held Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron with Rev. Allen Bidne officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Akron with military graveside rites conducted by Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Neunaber, Eldon Von Hagel, Melvin, Dennis, James and David Hitzemann, Kevin Groon and Thurlow Steen.

Honorary Pallbearers were Gary Hartmann, Ed Hartmann, Elmer Anderson, Hugh “Barney” Swift, Fred Claesson, Leonard Buryanek, Don Lucken, Cal Robertson, Allen Vanderhelm.

Organist was Marietta Nielsen. Congregational hymns were “Blest Be the Tie that Binds”, “Rock of Ages”; “Softly and Tenderly”, and “The Old Rugged Cross.”.

Mr. Hitzemann was born Jan. 6, 1924 in Akron, the son of Henry William and Matie (Von Hagel) Hitzemann. He attended the Riverview country school in rural Akron. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He returned to Akron where he was employed by Dirks Hardware and Appliance for many years. He also spent many years working in the agriculture field as a farm hand, corn sheller and feed mill laborer at the Akron Feed Mill and Nelson’s Hatchery.

He was an avid baseball fan. He enjoyed puzzles and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Rhonda and Dave McCarthy of Sioux City; one granddaughter, Sky Hitzemann and one grandson, David J. McCarthy both of Sioux City; three brothers and their wives, George and Marilyn of Hudson, S.D.; Marvin and Helen of Akron and Arden and Katy of Canton, S. D.; two sisters and their husbands, Helen and Lester Meske of Clear Lake, Iowa and Esther and Don Neunaber of Akron; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Hitzemann of Worthington, Minn.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Neunaber, Eldon Von Hagel, Melvin, Dennis, James and David Hitzemann, Kevin Groon and Thurlow Steen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother; Robert Hitzemann.
