Services for 65-year old Herb Schroer were held Wednesday, July 30, 1980 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland, Ia. The Rev. Leroy Reimer was clergyman. Mrs. Loren Drefke was the organist and the congregation sang two hymns, "Who Knows When Death May Overtake Me" and :Who Trusts In God."

Casket bearers were Rex Martin, Paul Jensen, George Hoeman, Ken Hayne, Oscar Mews and John Engelke. Honorary casket attendants were Martin Vlaming, Frank Moore, Marvin Fiddelke, George Cole, H.B. Erichsen, H.J. Swanson, Fred Deppe and Bill Strahman.

Committal services were in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.

Herbert W. Schroer, the son of John and Ella Wittler Schroer, was born June 25, 1915 at Dixon, Nebr. He had been a resident of Sutherland, Ia. area since 1934. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was self-employed in the trucking business in Sutherland for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 152 of Sutherland and the Disabled American Veterans.

He passed away at the Veteran's Hospital in Minneapolis, Mn. on July 26, 1980 at the age of 65. Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, Grace, and one brother, Raymond.

Left to cherish his memory are five sisters: Mrs. Ted (Alice) Rathjen of Yankton, S.D., Mrs. Abel (Mary) Vsnderwater of Dillion, Mont., Mrs. Willis (Helen) Burmaster of Townsend, Mont., Mrs. Lester (Lena) Walters of White Sulphur Springs, Mont., and Mrs. Ernest (Charlotte) Behrle of Bremerton, Wa.; One brother, Charles of Blunt, S.D.; other relatives and many friends.

Military Service Record
He entered the service May 10, 1941 at the receiving station in Portland, Ore. and served as a PFC in the 59th Coast Artillery Battalion in the United States Army.

His overseas service was from June 6, 1941 until Sept. 9, 1945 in the Pacific, mainly the Philippine Islands, [POW] He received his Honorable Discharge at Sam Houston, Tx. on March 9, 1946.

Military Services
Full Military Honors will be accorded at the Graveside in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, S.D.
