Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 28, 1976 for Richard Groen at the Trinity United Church of Christ at Hartley. Rev. Bernard Sayler was the officiating clergyman. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley with the Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge. Masonic services were conducted at the graveside by Beacon Lodge #495 AF and AM of Hartley.

Richard George Groen, the son of Ernest and Hattie (Smith) Groen, was born May 11, 1919 at George, in Lyon County, Iowa. He attended schools at Ashton, Iowa. He lived in the Ashton community until 1939, when he moved to Hartley, and has resided here on the same farm since 1951.

He was united in marriage to Lucille Petersen at Hartley on December 25, 1941. To this union were born three children.

He passed away July 25, 1976 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Hartley after a long illness, at the age of 57.

He was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ of Hartley and its brotherhood, and also served six years on the Church Consistory, a member and Past Master of Beacon Lodge #495 AF and AM at Hartley and a member of Eastern Star, Golden Sheaf Chapter 181, also of Hartley.

Preceding him in death were his father, one brother, and one grandson who died in infancy.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lucille; three sons, Rodney L. and his wife Miriam of Phoenix, Arizona, Wayne R. of Washington D.C. and Lynn L. of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Melissa and Amy Groen; his mother, Mrs. Hattie Groen of Hartley; one sister, Mrs. Lester (Alice) DeBoer of Hartley; two brothers, Leo Groen of Mesa, Arizona and Arthur Groen of Hutchinson, Minnesota, and other relatives and friends.
