Funeral services for Earl Smith, 97, West Liberty, were held Jan. 12, 1996 at Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty, with the Rev. Marion Padilla officiating. Beverly Blair was the organist and pallbearers were Joe, Dennis, Michael, Richard, Rodney Jr. and William E. Smith; Steve Burnett and Harold Weinard, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Barclay, Doug Smith, Rick Weinard, Marion Barnhart, Earl Deahr and Thomas McMichael. Burial was in the Oak Ridge cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Jan. 9 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, following an extended illness.
The son of William and Barbara McMichael Smith, he was born Feb. 7, 1898 in Pike township, Muscatine county. He married Della B. Kramer Aug. 22, 1917 in Muscatine. They celebrated 75 years of marriage in August 1992.
The couple farmed all their lives southeast of West Liberty, before retiring to West Liberty.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Muscatine County Farm Bureau, the IOOF Lodge and the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Burnett, West Liberty; 5 sons, Frank, Robert, Kenneth, Wayne and Rodney Smith, all of West Liberty; 28 grandchildren and several great and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993; a daughter, Betty Weinard; and a sister Ethel Deahr.
