Funeral services for Lina K. (Mrs. Paul) Cantrell, 79, were held at the Morgan Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon Jan. 5, 1994 with graveside services at the West Liberty cemetery. Mrs. Cantrell died at her home in Mt. Vernon Jan. 1.

The daughter of Henry and Lina Keen Wintermute Hayes, she was born at Atalissa Aug. 6, 1914. She graduated from West Liberty high school with a normal training certificate and taught in the country schools in Muscatine county. She married Paul (Jack) Cantrell at West Liberty Aug. 22, 1936. She was postmistress at Centerdale until 1948.

Mrs. Cantrell began employment with the Community Action Program before the agency was called Iowa East Central TRAIN. In 1967 she was an outreach worker for the low income of Cedar county. She was responsible for the establishment of the first Head Start program in Cedar county. When TRAIN established an office in Cedar county, Lina was the first site manager in Tipton. She worked on getting the first congregate meal site established in the old Bringer Inn building in Bennett. Later the site was moved to the Methodist church in Tipton. Lina was largely responsible for the effort to fund and build the current Congregate Meal Site now the Cedar County Senior Center in Tipton. After 17 years of service she retired in 1982.

She moved from Stanwood to Mt. Vernon in 1985.

She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Buchmeyer, Mt. Vernon; 2 sons, James and Don, Coralville; 2 sisters, Nellie Morrison, Iowa City and Elsie Marie Cheseboro, Mt. Vernon; a brother, Delbert Hayes, Atalissa; 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and 2 brothers, Leonard and Cyril.
