Funeral services for Jerald F. Mathias, 57, Muscatine, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1993 at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home in Muscatine. Pallbearers are Jerry Mathias, Jr., Jim Mathias, Larry Schaapveld, Mike McGlothlen, Jerry Shoultz and Herman Howard. Honorary bearers will be Floyd Tennell, Rich Richardson and Danny Titus. Burial was in the Memorial Park cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion and VFW of Muscatine.

Mr. Mathias died Dec. 24 at his home in Muscatine.

The son of Charles and Elizabeth Baker Mathias, Sr., he was born Feb. 13, 1936 in Muscatine county. He married Vernabelle Brown in March 1963 in Muscatine.

Mr. Mathias served with the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He and his wife had been foster parents for 35 children.

Mr. Mathias was retired from the H. J. Heinz Co. of Muscatine, where he had worked for 31 years.

He is survived by his wife; 2 sons, Rodney Mathias, at home and Paul Mathias, Minnesota; a daughter, Sandra Vance, Muscatine; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; his mother, Elizabeth Mathias, Muscatine; 2 sisters, Mrs. Jerry (Betty) Shoultz, Moline, Ill. and Mrs. Herman (Joyce) Howard, Muscatine; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
