John Stewart, aged 75, residing at Fruitland was struck by a switch engine in the South Muscatine yards Saturday morning and instantly killed. The engine was pushing two box cars and the engineer did not see the man, the switchman on the forward end of the cars saw Stewart but expected him to get off the track until it was too late when he signaled the engineer to stop. The engineer reversed the engine but the man had been struck and ran over. He became entangled in the trucks of the engine and was dragged for some distance. One wheel passed directly over his breast, severing the head and shoulders from the trunk and horribly mangling the entire body.

Mrs. Ruth A. Dodson, a sister of the deceased, arrived Monday from Freeland, Pa. The coroner's jury in session Saturday afternoon reached a verdict, taking away all blame attached to the railway company and stating that the deceased came to his death on the tracks of the M. N. & S. railroad.
