Carol Jean Mahler was born on April 7, 1934, to Sadie E. (Shipley) and Fred H. Mahler in St. Clair Township, Monona County, Iowa. Carol had one older half-sister, Doris. Carol was baptized and confirmed her faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ute. She attended Ute school, St. Paul’s school, and graduated from Ute High School in 1951. During her school years, she excelled in academics and enjoyed singing in chorus and playing the coronet in the band. She had a great passion for basketball and shot free throws in the 1951 State Tournament. Her love of basketball stayed with her forever. She could be found shooting baskets with her kids at home and attending all of their games. She enjoyed music concerts and was able to be in attendance at her kids’, and sometimes grandkids’, activities of sport and music.
During high school she started dating Glenn C. Ullerich, a kind, funny, and handsome guy from rural Charter Oak. Their mutual love resulted in marriage on December 27, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ute. They made their home on the farm by Charter Oak, where they were blessed with three daughters: Jacqueline Joy “Jackie” (born nine months after the State Tournament), Glennis (deceased in infancy), and Lita Jean, born in 1956.
In 1959, Carol’s parents decided to move into town, and Carol and Glenn purchased the farm in St. Clair Township where Carol was born. Her family of four moved to their new Ute address. In 1960 Stanton Glenn was born. Carol made sure to rear her children in Christ and instilled in them the value of education and hard work. She was a good cook, and we fondly remember the roast beef on Sundays, the cinnamon rolls, caramel popcorn, and Schwann’s ice cream. Christmas Eve, for many years, was spent at the farmhouse, with mom in charge of the fun.
Carol had an inquisitive mind and always wanted to know more about Jesus, strengthening her faith. Being a very social person, she and Glenn liked music and to dance, play cards, visit and travel with friends and family. Carol also bowled on a league for many years.
Carol and Glenn moved to Mapleton in 2018 and made new friends. Tarra and Joe took Carol on road trips and were always there for her. We are so thankful for our new friends.
