17 July 2024Phyllis June (Haller) Bergstrom, 98, of Onawa, Iowa passed away Friday, July 5, 2024 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa.
A memorial service will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 19, 2024 at Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Paul Coen, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Phyllis’ obituary. Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Phyllis June (Haller) Bergstrom was born June 1, 1926, in Sioux City to John and Sarah Haller. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, received her teaching degree from University of South Dakota, and taught second grade at what is now known as West Monona Community School.
She married Wallace Bergstrom on December 27, 1960 and they were blessed to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a celebration in 2010. Both were members of Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa.
They were lifetime farmers. Phyllis loved to garden, especially her flowers, which she enjoyed sharing with others. She was a loving person and good friend to many. A relative remembers her welcoming smile and how she loved to share. A visitor never left without her sending something to take along. It might be candy, fruit, or a packed lunch to eat on the way.
Their daughter Janet was born on August 31, 1963, and much of their time was devoted to her care and education first at Hope Haven in Rock Valley and then at Crossroads of Western Iowa in Onawa. Education was of great importance to Phyllis and after Wallace’s death in 2014, it was her pleasure to organize the Janet Bergstrom Scholarship given annually to a West Monona Senior student.
Those left to honor her memory are her daughter, Janet Bergstrom of Whiting, Iowa; brother, Tom Haller and wife Mary Sue of Ames, Iowa; plus many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sarah Haller; husband, Wallace Bergstrom; brother, John Haller, Jr.; and sisters, Pauline Melloy and Sally Oswald.
