Terence “Terry” C. Virtue 1934 - 2021

Terence “Terry” C. Virtue, 87, of Onawa, Iowa passed away Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa.

A Masonic Service is being planned for a later date at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa with Steve Jewett, Orator, with Military Honors provided by the United States Army. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Terry was born July 2, 1934 in Cherokee, Iowa the son of William Wayne and Ariel Hamil (Moore) Virtue. The family moved to Onawa in 1937, where Terry resided for the rest of his life.

He started his education in the Onawa Public School; and graduated from high school in 1952, and enrolled at Iowa State College (Now University), graduating in 1957, with a degree in Industrial Engineering. While at Iowa State, he met his future wife, Jeanne M. Steele.

He reported for active military duty as a 2nd Lt. Lieutenant in the United States Army Corp of Engineers, at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, then transferred (after training) to Fort Benning, Georgia. Terry and Jeanne were married August 3, 1958, at the Congregational Church in Onawa, Iowa. Following completion of his military duty, the couple moved back to Onawa, where Terry joined his brother, Jack at Virtue Engineering Company.

They were the parents of two sons, Mark C. (Sandra) Virtue of Kirkland, Washington; and Todd W. (Karoline) of Boston, Massachusetts.

Terry was active in many service and fraternal organizations. He served twenty -one years on the West Monona Community School District Board of Education, and was past president. He served twelve years on the Board of the Onawa Public Library, seven years on the Monona County Landfill Board of Trustees, and was a lifelong member of the Iowa Engineering Society, including a year as president. He was also a lifelong member of the NSPE and a member of the Society of Land Surveyors of Iowa.

Terry joined Vesper Lodge #223, in 1955, was past Master, was a fifty-year member of the Sioux Valley of the Scottish Rite, Thirty-Three Degree Mason, and a member of the Onawa Kiwanis Club, serving as president and two years as Lt. Governor for Division 5 (Nebraska-Iowa District) where he and Jeanne attended eighteen Kiwanis International Conventions.

He was a registered Adult Scouter, starting in 1969, as Cub Master of Pack 332; a year as District Chairman and several years as assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 332. Terry received his Silver Beaver award while serving with the cubs.

Terry and his wife enjoyed traveling, and visited all fifty United States, Canada, Europe, China, Soviet Union, Australia and New Zealand, the British Isles and took several trips to the Isle of Man to visit some of the distant relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Virtue of Onawa, Iowa; two sons, Mark C. (Sandra) of Kirkland, Washington, and Todd W. (Karoline) of Boston, Massachusetts; granddaughter’s, Kamilla, Tamsen, and Kaylei Virtue; and grandson, Kai Virtue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Jack.
