HORNICK, Iowa -- Walter D. Steele, 90, of Whiting and formerly of Hornick, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 1990, at the Whiting nursing home after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Hornick, with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery in rural Holly Springs. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Wood Funeral Home in Sloane.

Mr. Steele was born May 12, 1900, at Holly Springs, son of Vance and Florence (Metcalf) Steele. He married Cecile Madden Jan. 12, 1921, in Dakota City, Neb. They farmed in the Hornick area until retiring in 1970. Cecile died Aug. 8, 1975, in Hornick. He then married Ina Brenden May 15, 1977, at Albaton, Iowa. She died May 14, 1987, at Hornick. He had been a resident of the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting since 1987.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Hornick. He was a former member of the elevator board and the school board and had driven a school bus for 25 years.

Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Lucille and Bob Shaffer of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Mary Smith of Sloane, Gloria and Jack Steinhoff of Smithland, and Jeanie and Darrell Dunbar of Sioux City; a stepson, Maurice Brenden of Whiting; a stepdaughter, Elaine Linscott of Bella Vista, Ark.; 18 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Clifford, Jan. 31, 1942; two brothers, four sisters and a great-grandchild.
