August 12, 1941 ~ July 15, 2020 (age 78)

Orvan Jerome “Jerry” Hanson, Jr., 78, passed away on July 15, 2020 in Mesa, AZ. (Formerly of Soldier, Iowa)

Memorial Services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 5, 2021 at the Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa with Pastor Marsha Smith officiating. (Please bring and wear masks). A luncheon and Celebration of Life will follow at the Church. Burial will be in the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, rural Soldier, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Jerry was born in Sioux City, IA on August 12, 1941 to Orvan and Corrinne (Cusick) Hanson. He grew up on the family farm in Soldier, IA where he attended school and participated in many activities including; 4-H club, sports and church. After high school he attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Augustana and taught school and coached for seven years in Missouri and Iowa. He then returned to school at the University of Tulsa where he attended Law School and earned his Juris Doctor. Upon graduation he practiced law in Kansas City, MO and Sioux City.

Jerry married Barbara Williams in Kansas City on May 30, 1975. They resided in Sergeant Bluff, IA for several years before relocating to Tulsa, OK. He continued to practice law in Oklahoma until being appointed Associate District Judge in Buffalo, OK. He held this position from 1985 until 1991 when he was appointed Associate District Judge in Miami, OK. In 1995 he began private practice in Miami and continued this until 2006 when he retired. After retiring, Jerry and Barbara moved to Fountain of the Sun Retirement Community in Mesa, AZ. During retirement, Jerry continued to stay busy by working as a funeral assistant for Mariposa Gardens.

Jerry was very active in several organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the Oklahoma, Missouri and Iowa Bar Associations. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Lions Club for many years. He helped start the Lions Club and the Citizens Service Club in Fountain of the Sun. Recently, he had been a leader of a fundraising event called, “A Night to Remember”. This event raised money so that all veterans living in the Fountain of the Sun could travel on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He also served as a guardian on one of these trips. Jerry had many interests, including theater, travel and sports. He loved baseball, and played both baseball and fast pitch softball for many years as a young man and later coached baseball. He played softball every winter in Fountain of the Sun after retiring and followed the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals regularly. Jerry was a kind, generous, caring man who will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife Barbara of Mesa, AZ, son Leland (Betsy) of Miami, OK, daughter Denise Aaron (Larry) of Kansas City, MO, daughter DeAnn Ballard (Tom) of Kansas City, MO, sister Cheryl Hallquist (Jon) of St. Joseph, MO and grandchildren Sam & Andy Hanson, Morgan & Vanessa Jenkins and Grant Aaron.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Phillip Hanson.
