Avis Mae Kurtz

POMONA, MISSOURI - Avis Mae Kurtz, 90, Pomona, died at 7:20 a.m., Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Willow Care Nursing Home.

She was born on November 14, 1922, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to John Erbe and Mabel Wherry Erbe.

On August 17, 1942, she was married at Osage, to James H. Kurtz, who preceded her in death on November 29, 2003. To this union, one son, Ian S. Kurtz was born. They lived in Osage for several years before moving to Pomona, Missouri in 1954. Avis was employed at Rawlings Sporting Goods in Willow Springs, Missouri, for several years.

In 1968, she and James purchased the Hi-Way Store in Mountain View, Missouri, and operated it for 15 years before selling it. They then moved to their farm in Pomona, Missouri, where they raised beef, cattle and hay. In her retirement, Avis enjoyed her grandchildren, traveling and quilting. Mrs. Kurtz was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, White Church, Missouri.

She is survived by her son, Ian Kurtz, Pomona, Missouri; one sister, Norma Gilmore, husband, Rex, Willow Springs, Missouri; three grandchildren, Eric Kurtz, wife, Sherry, Nixa, Missouri, Heather Kurtz, Springfield, Missouri, and James Kurtz, wife, Michelle, Pomona, Missouri; five great-grandchildren, Breanna, Brittany, Aiden, Ian James and Kelby Kurtz; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, husband, two brothers, Don and Dale and her daughter-in-law, Camille, precede her in death.

Funeral services for Avis Mae Kurtz will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m., Thursday, July 18, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Cemetery, and may be left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.robertsondrago.com.
