Brooke Elliott of Riceville dies in accident

Posted By moderator On February 13th 2011. Under Gone too soon

Brooke Elliott was involved in almost everything at Riceville High School in Riceville, Iowa.

She died Friday in Minnesota when the car she was a passenger in collided with a snow plow during bad weather conditions. Recent Riceville graduate Dylan Mayer was driving the car and Elliott was a passenger. It is unclear yet exactly what the accident details will reveal, but early reports are that Mayer hit another car that had slowed in front of him to allow a motorist ahead to turn left. After hitting the car Mayer veered across the road and was hit in the passenger side where Elliott was. After hitting the snowplow, the car flipped over into a ditch. Mayer received non life-threatening injuries, but Elliott died at the scene.

Police have said that alcohol was not involved and the two were wearing their seat belts. It was just a horrible accident in treacherous road conditions.

Elliott was a popular student at Riceville, she was involved in cheer-leading, band, softball and volleyball. She had also been named homecoming queen.

Brooke Elliott was 18 years old.

Riceville High School senior killed in accident in Minnesota

A Riceville High School senior was killed in an accident Friday night in southern Minnesota when the car she was riding in struck a state snow plow.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the victim was Brooke Elliott, 18, of Riceville.

Riceville High School Principal Greg Adams said Elliott was in band, softball and volleyball. She also was a basketball cheerleader and was chosen as homecoming queen. “We are a close-knit school and community, and she will be missed,” Adams said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Elliot and Mayer families.”

Dylan C. Mayer, 19, of Lime Springs was the driver of a car in which Elliott was riding. Adams said Mayer was a 2010 graduate of Riceville High School.

Adams said because of the size of the school all the students know each other, and that makes a loss like this especially hard. But it also enables them to come together to support each other. Counselors from the Area Education Agency as well as local clergy will be available at the K-12 school building in Riceville beginning at 7:30 a.m. Monday for those who want to talk to them, Adams said.

Funeral arrangements for Elliott were pending Saturday evening. She is the daughter of Jerry and Tracy Elliot of Riceville.

The accident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Highway 63, about two miles south of Spring Valley, Minn.

According to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol, Elliott was a passenger in a Buick Century driven by Mayer. The Buick and an Oldsmobile Regency driven by Marvin J. Hamersma, 38, of Spring Valley were southbound on Highway 63 when an unrelated third vehicle made a left turn ahead of them. The Buick then clipped the Oldsmobile, crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a Minnesota Department of Transportation snow plow.

Both the Buick and the snow plow went into the east ditch, and the Buick rolled over. Mayer received an injury, but it was not life-threatening, according to the report. Neal Hinners, 54, of Rochester, Minn., the driver of the snow plow, received a minor injury.

Hamersma had no apparent injury.

Icy road conditions may have contributed to the accident, the report said.
