Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar for one of its pioneer residents, Kari Elverum, who passed away early Monday morning, July 4, 1955, at her home in St. Ansgar. The Rev. O.A. Langehough was in charge of the service and committal was at First Lutheran cemetery.

Though very active and much interested in life in spite of her unusual age, Mrs. Elverum has been in failing health since 1936. She has always been a very lovable lady and has a host of friends to whom she has been an inspiration and a help. She will be much missed by relatives and friends alike.

Kari Knudson was born to Hans and Aase Knudson March 29, 1858, at their home one mile southwest of St. Ansgar on what is now the Ted Tollefson farm. She was baptized by the Rev. H.A. Preus and was confirmed by the Rev. Claus Clausen, June 6, 1872, at First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar.

On March 20, 1884, she was united in marriage to Thomas A. Elverum of Kensett, where they lived until 1919. They had purchased the home in St. Ansgar, where she lived until her death, and were moving into this home when Mr. Elverum passed away.

The couple had no children but they generously shared their home with Mrs. Elverum's parents and with an uncle in their declining years. Also, three nephews, Andrew, Theodore and Sever, spent many of their teen-age years in their home, the nephews' mother having passed away. For thirteen years, the couple kept two nieces, Clara (Mrs. A.E. Engness of Oskaloosa, Iowa) and Alma Knudson of St. Ansgar, until these nieces went to Dakota to live with their father, Louis Knudson. They then took unto themselves two children from the Rice Lake Children's Home of Twin Valley, Minnesota, Elwin Gilbertson of Toledo, Ohio, and Minnie (Mrs. Otto Koball of St. Ansgar).

In 1936 Mrs. Elverum asked her brother, Lewis Knudson, and his daughter, Alma, to come live with her. Mr. Knudson passed away in 1943, after which Alma took over the responsibilities in the home and cared lovingly for her aging aunt.

Mrs. Elverum leaves to mourn her passing eleven nieces and four nephews as well as a host of dear friends.

Bearers at the services were Otto Koball, Lewis Elverum, Melvin Elverum, Neal Nielson, Henry Jordan and Axel Engness.
